November 2007 To believers, Nepal's child goddesses or Kumaris can bestow luck with a glance. But when these children grow up, returning to normal life is virtually impossible. Girls selected as Kumaris must be aged between two and four and satisfy all the conditions of '32 perfections'. For a few short years, "all Nepalese people worship them" states one woman. But as soon as they experience their first menstruation, they lose their goddess status.

Any young and pious Hindu girl or woman can be a living goddess as long as she adheres to the Hindu religious beliefs and rituals. Sometimes, a diety can manifest in her if she is clean and pure in mind, body, and spirit. She cannot eat meat, nor salty or spicy food that affects the senses, nor can she be bodily unclean or sexually active.
I just don't like the fact that the old kumari gets replaced by a new one once or before she hits puberty......that's insane.................but it is a part of the culture...........the government should give more support to the former kumaris...........
