Isaac Stern (1920-2001) is soloist in this February, 1953 performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47. Sir Thomas Beecham conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. I created this video from a 10-inch LP, manufactured in England by the Columbia Gramophone Company, serial number 33C1008. Notes on the reverse side of the LP jacket (and included in their entirety in this video) by Malcolm MacDonald. Stern was 33 years old when this recording was made. Sibelius had only 4 more years to live (note in the graphic at 8:47 that the date in parentheses beneath his name shows only his date of birth).

The Gramophone Magazine review of this recording (March, 1955, p. 39) is available here:

  • This is my favorite interpretation of the Sibelius concerto. Stern manages to bring out both the fire and ice, and he is technically formidable as well. He apparently did not perform this piece often in his later career, but this recording is something to treasure. His playing in the second movement melts the heart (please post it and the third movement if you can).

  • @effiefl8136 Ok, I will try to do so this weekend. david

  • If you enjoy Isaac Stern's early performances, you may be interested in this 1952 recording (Stern was 32 years old) of the third movement of the Brahms violin concerto, with Sir Thomas Beecham conducting:

  • listen to Ida Haendel in the same piece

  • Stern was a magnificent violinist who later became a great teacher and ambassador for Israel.

His playing suffered later in life with all of his other interests. But here he is at his best. Magnificent, original talent. I think America's greatest violinist of the 20th century.

  • Many thanks!:)

  • wow....the notes are flying.....

  • It goes to show that notes on a page do not make music or even are music. They are a road map, at best limited instructions, give to a human with a soul through which can be released. Thank you for posting this. Fascinating.

  • Marvelous! It may be base, but what chops!

  • really GREAT!
