Make your own decisions about neutering--don't let other people or vets pressure you into doing something you don't want to do. Cats spray to mark their territory or when they feel insecure, and they will spray whether they are neutered or not. If Sparta is an indoor-only kitty, he may never spray even if you never neuter him. On the other hand, neutering can help calm him down as he matures and starts to feel the urge to procreate. It's best to neuter when he is fully grown.

I've never seen the skeleton of a cat in a sink. I bet if you put his food down somewhere sanitary and not in the way of foot traffic he would eventually eat it. Also, cats don't like to have their food and water dishes near each other, so keep his water dish in a different location from his food dish..

Do they not spray if there's another cat on their territory? - my cat does that.

He will only start spraying when/if he smells a female cat in heat, you shouldn't have to get him fixed if there's no female cats in heat around.
