This lesson is designed to help the speaker affect a New York accent, using the 'AW' sound, which appears in the following words:

call, talk, long, fall, all, mall, off, water

The monologue is Sebastian (male, 39, short, intense, alcoholic) from 'Pandora 2011: Accounts of the Cursed Shopping Center', a novel by Ivan Borodin.

Available on the Kindle:

The guy at the bar is named Larry Rosenberg, but everybody calls him Larry Letterman, for he always wears a light green jacket embroidered with a four-inch capital L. Larry Letterman uses red shades to hide his eyes, which change color when he talks—just one of the ways being the longest tenured tour guide at Pandora's Tours has disfigured him.
As for me, I'm the second longest tenured guide. Since I started working at the Box, I'd say that eight-five percent of my hair has fallen out. When I look over at Larry, his psychedelic eyes shifting like kaleidoscopes beneath his shades, I wonder what new mutation is in store for me. After all, he's been giving tours of the enchanted mall only six months longer than I have.
He sits alone, nursing his Bacardi and Coke, his bony fingers rolling a menthol 100 on the long wooden bar of the Hornet's Nest lounge. Early April is still the off-season, so the evening clientele is limited to hard drinkers, hookers and johns. I qualify for two of those categories. Larry doesn't qualify for any of them. You can't be a real drinker if you water down your liquor with cola, and no working girl will go anywhere near him.

  • I love your eyes. Very lovely. And great video. :3

  • Also I can identify Irish influence in the way of rolling the 'r' before a vowell or even the 'l' sound... I'm not sure about the way of stressing the sentences, the 'intonation'... if there are people with further knowledge about English accents I would be so glad to read their opinion.

  • It is curious. I'm from Spain but I speak English mainly with London-southern British accent, finding some similarities with NY English. Despite vowels are shorter and they tend to be stronger, as well as the 'l' has got a characteritically American pronunciation and 't' sounds very liquid, NY English is completely non-rhotic which is the growing trend in British dialects, in opposition to the vast majority of American dialects. Any possible influence of English settlers or non-rhotic Dutch?

  • reminds me of every mafia film ever

  • You left outta your list the word "the" which of course we Bronxites say as "da"; as in "I come from da Bronx." Unless, of course, you mean New York accent as in Manhattan?

  • great video, thanks!
