FilmCatcher spoke with writer-director Tanaz Eshaghian at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival about her illuminating new film. She candidly discussed her experiences filming in Iran after a long absence, her tremendous respect for the Persian sense of community, and what she hopes average viewers will take away from seeing Be Like Others.

  • @lovinnia yes, and also calling them "men", I mean if you are going to make a documentary about it, start by educating YOURSELF! Starting by using the preferred pronouns, and NOT calling it a sex change operation, it's a Sex reassignment surgery. I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes of it, it hardly encompasses what it really means to be transexual.

  • Be Like Others is a moving film, but I have problems with it. One of the main points of the film is that people undergoing SRS in Iran are doing so primary to achieve heteronormativity and there is some kind of national imperative to give gay men SRS and make them into women... which is totally untrue. In fact, only some very lesser known clerics support this idea and it's not national policy. That one of the people in the film is confused about their gender identity isn't surprising.

  • wonderful film. completely heartbreaking, though. i cried a lot.

  • film was very good best i seen done on a issue such as this.

i wont comment on the potical aspects of it as i leave that job to fox news.

  • this movie sounds really interesting

  • you are really full of yourself.. and you call the trans people "men who undergo sex change"

this shows how much knowledge you've got.. and the problem is that you people make movies about transsexual ppl.
