@rubymaxgp The NCAA's version of the rulebook does have "'Directly' is interpreted to mean within a 45-degree angle [...] toward the base the pitcher is throwing to" - so the argument at college level is correct (as bad as it sounds!).
My every instinct says that's a balk though, 45 degree allowance or not...

Any attempt to deceive the runner and any motion towards home is a balk.
