"The Scotish Gigg" (Anonyme Anglais, 17ème siècle) played by Rafael Puyana.
This beguiling piece of music comes from the Drexel manuscript (5609) now in the New York Public Library. (MAGICA SYMPATHIAE).

  • It all depends on the quality of your computer soundcard and audio setup. Moreover Youtube-soundquality is not realy reliable. This schotisch Gigg, doesn't sound to me, like a gigue actually.

  • Rafael Puyana says "This jig is in binary rhythm rather than triple time like italian jigs and most french examples of this dance. Apparently this traditional rhythm is still danced in Scotland and Ireland, where it is known as Scottish or Irish reel."

  • that harpsichord sucks!the piece is great though

  • That harpsichord... is an Italian harpsichord by Domenicus Pisaurensis, Venice, 16th century. Collection of Rafael Puyana, Paris...

  • It's refreshing to read that others contend Puyana's playing was at its best during his Pleyel years. He no doubt felt obliged to play on socially acceptable instruments after Leonhardt, Kirkpatrick and others used began using more traditional instruments, but what a waste! His training and conditioning were too ingrained for him to adjust to neo-baroque harpsichords; his legacy would have been far more important and interesting had he remained loyal to his aesthetic.

  • i thought the typical harpsichord has black keys and white sharps??

  • That is one LONG harpsichord!

  • John Gavin, You are absolutely right according to someone who has a pleyel at his own home.

  • Rafael Puyana was great when he played on Pleyel harpsichords. When he gave those up he never sounded as brilliant or great as he once was :(

  • I enjoyed that very much! As for the instrument, it's not perfect, but who cares? It has character. It dose not diminish the music in any way. IMHO it enhances it.

  • Who said that bad harpsichord builters didn't exist in 16th century?!

  • I love harpsichord very much, this harpsichord sounds excellent by no means! thank you !
