After six years, British military operations in Iraq have ended and the last troops are now packing up and leaving Basra. 179 servicemen and women will not be returning home though, having lost their lives whilst serving with the British Armed Forces.
This is a powerful and timely documentary in which friends and family of some of those who died during the conflict explore the deeply personal and lasting legacy Iraq has for them.
The invasion of Iraq has always been controversial but this film provides a voice for some of the people who have been most significantly affected by the decisions that took us to war. From how the withdrawal affects them and their hopes for Iraq and its people to whether they feel blame, anger or pride - for those who are still coming to terms with their loss, their thoughts on Iraq are powerful, varied and sometimes surprising.
The film also tells the story of Lance Corporal John 'Frenchie' Le Galloudec, a soldier who suffered severe spinal injuries after being shot whilst on operations in Basra. His friend and fellow soldier Corporal Rodney Wilson was fatally wounded trying to drag Frenchie to safety. For Frenchie the legacy of Iraq is both physical and mental scars.

  • I can't believe Iraqi's are getting called terrorists in this video. They shouldn't even be called insurgents. It's their damn country. And no matter how you try to veil the puppets that were placed as presidents of Iraq by the "coalition", They are still just that. Puppets. Just like Karzai, just like Pinochet, Ngo Diem, Shah of Iran, Mobutu. The list is long.

It was 7 months ago since I wrote that comment so I don't remember exactly what made me say that but I would guess that it was because of what the woman at 01:35-02:04 said. And every time a soldier dies on a foreign battlefield people seems just as surprised over it as the last 20 times.

If your mother is one of the mothers I was talking about, I will call her an idiot no matter how much people tell me not to. If not, well then I won't. Simple as that.

    Flipant? I'm not familiar -

  • @PoppingSanta not at any point through out this documentry does anyone say that there sons daughters didn't know the risks! And thanks for pointing out that soldiers die in wars on a documntry about dead soldier! Please dont call my mother and my friends an idiot! PLease go and make flipant commens on something less serious! Like Harry Potter! :)

  • I'm getting so fucking tired of those idiot mothers that only blame others and say that their sons, daughters and all the soldiers didn't know about the risks.

IT'S WAR, PEOPLE DIE IN WARS !!

  • I served and lived with CPL Wilson for a while, he was a model soldier and a genuinely good man. A leader and a true instructor, respected by all that worked with him. Will: I SALUTE YOU !

  • Interestingly varying points of view from the different survivors. thanks for the post.
