At the barrier the particle is either transmitted (and "kills" the cat)or reflected (and the cat is saved) with equal probability. In quantum theory noting definite happens until an observation is made. The particle's wave function is a superposition of two parts - relected AND transmitted. The cat is also entangled and enters the superposition in states both alive AND dead. When the box is opened the wave function collapses to one of the alternatives. (Here the cat is saved from death and only stands up if the particle enters the box.) See the associated video for the de Broglie-Bohm version.
What if the cat meows or moves in a way that signals outside?
