I had a 1964 Ford Fairlane 6 cyl which was just as hard to start when it was cold.

I sympathize on learning to shift these older cars -- it's nothing like a new manual tranny. I have a '37 Lincoln -- even with the synchro, you need to make smooth but deliberate moves out of first, over, and *then* into second -- it doesn't like to be rushed!. Also, pull the choke out about halfway b4 starting; use the throttle cable only if you flood. Have fun!

Thanks for sharing this video. The flathead Ford engine sounds nice. The synchromesh in 2nd is worn so you need to double-clutch as others have suggested. Upshifts are easy, but downshifts generally require you to rev the engine in neutral, depress the clutch and feel your way in. As for starting, I wonder what the manual says? My old BMW would always start cold if I first pulled out the choke, and then depress the gas pedal fully twice, to prime the carb.

I drive an unrestored 1930 Model A Ford. If I go to Safeway for groceries I can see a line up of old guys by the car from the checkout line. I've even had old guys step out in front of me just to talk. One walked into my garage as I was parking. He was a WW2 vet and I gave him a ride home. Cars are emotional bring back lots of memories so try to be understanding if someone gets bent out of shape becuase you haven't mastered double clutching etc. Some of these guys are a wealth of knowledge.

It's painful to watch older equipment going through unneccessary pain. If you're not sure what you're doing find someone who can help you. Remember that essentially you are just preserving this for the next guy. You'd be surprised to see how many old guys would love to help out. For many they are extremely passionate. These cars are special to many people so educate yourself and enjoy it. Keep the old Ford flame burning!
