Aksel Schiotz, Tenor (after several diseases baritone)
Franz Schubert - Die schöne Muellerin
First Song: Das Wandern
(Recorded 1945)
My personal opinion: It was a coincidence that I heard Schiotz many years ago and from the very first moment I was in spellbound with this unique voice. Many "Liedsänger" gave their performance an artificial touch, but Schiotz performing "Muellerin" is art without being artificial. I prefer him much more than overestimated Fischer-Dieskau... May I have your clemency for that line?
As a child of the 1950s, I naturally was present for the birth of rock'n'roll. But my mother was a chamber and lieder junkie, so I got the full treatment, bless her heart. Schiotz took up permanent residence in my inner ear with Every Valley Shall Be Exalted from Handel's Messiah for HMV-UK/Angel-US. Since I was at Lutheran parochial school this
got to me, fast. This version remains the world-class gold standard of this one. It's on Youtube *here*:

If not among the 100 greatest, then close.
Unfortunately - with resistance and all - his performance in Emil Reesens "Farinelli" is not well known, neither is Reesen, as it is in danish.
"Herren som skabte alt på jord, skabte vel også dette bord..." very danish
"Den som har livets mildhed kendt..."

My treasured Seraphim LP of Schiotz singing Nielsen is locked in storage 1000 miles away. If someone wants to make me cry, they should post a couple of those.

Glad he's here, what a beautiful voice. Not as well known as he should be!

Er leuchtet aus seinem Innern: Herzlichen Dank für die Einbringung des großen Dänen, der sich trotz des deutschen Unheils über Dänemark wieder dem deutschen Lied zugewandt hat.

beautiful sound and one of my favorite of Schubert's pieces.

If you have not heard him, I recommend listening to some of Ian Bostridge's lieder recordings. IMHO the finest lieder singer since Fisher-Dieskau

With better luck, Schiotz may have been as great as Bjoerling. Actually, his voice resembles the voice of the great Swede with a tinge of darkness.

You have finally posted a singer who does not thrill me -- for this you receive clemency. You are even pardoned for your DFD comment -- after all, one can not be overrated without having a great reputation to begin with.
