Most model building codes define habitable space as:
A space in a building used for living, sleeping, eating or cooking.
Bathrooms, toilet rooms, closets, halls, storage or utility spaces and similar areas are not considered habitable spaces in most model codes. A basement is still a basement and not a crawl space even if it is not habitable space.
