Mr. Hyde really is an asshole. He terrorizes Ivy to the point where she wants to be dead rather than see him again.
You also forgot to mention the surprising near nudity. There's a scene where Miriam Hopkins (Ivy) covers her breasts with a sheet but you get a clear view of side boob. For 1932 that must have really been shocking or not.
