@12OclockLow - I don't care how difficult the problem is. If the engineering design can't handle expected conditions, don't make the widget.

@12OclockLow - if a wind turbine can't handle an expected wind speed ... it is just a matter of time before it gets trashed. I don't care how difficult the problem, if the design can't handle it, then don't create the widget.

@flyingpigstuff Then you should probably stop driving and using plastics and their derivatives. Get over it, you use oil products in almost every aspect of your life. If you are gonna preach to another person how they should feel about oil, then you better be a gypsy living in a tent.... made of sticks and grass. Otherwise, you just sound like a hypocrite, and on top of that a jerk.

@oracle2world but think about it, how do you shut down a windmill? You can't just "turn it off" and I highly doubt that you can "feather" them like a modern aircraft prop. The only way to stop it is to physically slow it down to a stop, and you can imagine for yourself how difficult this would be in a heavy wind if the windmill wasn't stopped in advance.

@oracle2world there are multiple safeties installed in wind turbines. Rotor speed is monitored, on average, by two tachometers (Main and safety). Once they detect over speed the blades pitch out of the wind, lowers rotor speed and applies the brake. It looks to me like the wind was just far too strong to stop and the machine burnt straight through its brake.

I thought these turbines automatically shut down when they sensed something was amiss. There no failsafe design for these?

I know for a fact, the most dangerous thing a person can do is get behind me after I eat Mexican food!
