This is a video demonstrating the effects of sparks and flames on various material in a Vitaeris 320 Portable Hyperbaric Chamber with a Sequal 10 Oxygen concentrator delivering 10 lpm of O2 into the chamber. The portable hbot chamber is pressurized to 4.2psi during the test.

A new updated video with even higher O2 levels has been published... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaZeC49fHxw

  • This is not great at all. Pathetic in that the experimenters are assuming that O2 is an explosive gas. It is not. They would get the same results in a "hard" chamber on 100% oxygen chamber, no matter what pressure. The real question is "Why?" Why go to the trouble of zipping you child in a bag, paying dollars for it, when you get the same percentage results from sitting in a room breathing Oxygen from a Hudson mask? And at a fraction of the cost with higher safety for all concerned.

  • Same as 100%O2... wait, the test has been planned. :)

As for breathing O2 from a mask in a room... an adult lung is 0.5 liters and a breath is taken in less than a second. That means the lung fills at a rate of 120 LPM. if 10LPM of that is 100%O2 by mask the remaining 110 LPM is 21%O2. Do the math and you will find that the lung will only have 27.6% O2.

In a 1.3 environment that is augmented further by the pressure. There is also the influence of the autoregulatory response.

  • This is great. Finally, someone proves that mHBOT chambers with O2 concentrators are inherently safe. Thanks!

  • Wait till you see how violently fire burns in 100% with NO INCREASED PRESSURE!

  • infidescientium,

Mask does provide close to 100% 02 because in addition to the mask there is usually a bag. The 02 in excess of what's needed to fill the mask itself fills the attached plastic bag. 10 breaths of .5 liters calculates out to 5 liters of 02, which the 8 lpm minimum or 10 lpm can easily provide.

The masks also have a valve to allow exhaled air out.

  • @KentMacLaughlin

I think a good illustration would be apollo 1

  • ..for them and their families. Individuals can choose their own risk toleration in this world

  • In the hospital, the oxygen tents for children, we do not allow any electronic device in the tent(only that one restriction). Yes O2 supports combustion, when the O2 is gone the fire is out. A patient who smoked while wearing O2 is unfortunately documented have started a fire that killed all patients and staff in that wing a hospital, hence the reason monochambers do not allow sparks and safety is a concern for anyone. The video is nice, and the testers were able to "put out each fire", lucky

  • ...needs to supplied with at least 10 lpm to allow the patient to clear exhaled CO2. Same with pedi patients. smaller mask, lowerflow needed. Now That is the only way patients can get that much oxygen in and out of a (soft chamber). Now added 02 flow at 10 lpm freely added to the chamber will give an 02 % of (calculate the volume container..the flow out of the chamber...the amt of CO2 produced by the occupants ) no way to do the math. You have to use a O2 analyzer to determine that.

  • Ok you people are driving me nuts. When a oxygen mask is placed on an individual, and it's literflow is higher than the individual's inspiratory volume and it does not entrain room air (tight mask seal) then one individual will receive 100% oxygen, clinically a tight mask seal is not able to be achieved, we estimate the oxygen to that individual to be about 80-95%. Adults typically breath 600cc times 10 breaths a minute= 6 lpm. A non-rebreather mask (what you see on these patients) ...cont

  • That is stupid... what would you have done if you would have had a flash fire... how did the plastic burning smell, and noxious gasses? Mmmmmm... Horses are smarter... a lot smarter

  • I did the math as suggested but got skewed results because no person has 60 breaths each second. Did you pluck this number out of the air? better read some good books on the subject or work in a clinic.

No o ne makes the claim that the bags are not safe. Just not to any US codes. And not efficient. Better treat children at a fraction of a cost at home using a "Hudson" mask or nasal-prongs. now THAT is real science.

    "Show me the science"
