CBS lost the NFL to Fox and lose some affiliates to Fox in 1994, both the CBS network and the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather were in 3rd place during that time. as today, CBS now has the NFL back, and 1st place in total viewers and most demographics with Fox, but its evening newscast are still in 3rd place behind NBC Evening News and ABC World News Tonight.

As well Not Only that in 1994 CBS was losing Affilates Left and Right because of losing NFL Football (except this one KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh well I guess you know the story about KDKA)

CBS had a lot riding on Scarlett, the four-night, eight-hour TV sequel to Gone with the Wind. It was, by far, the most expensive program the network broadcast in 1994. Despite an enormous promotional campaign, the miniseries failed to meet ratings expectations.
The 1994-95 season was a terrible one for CBS - the network lost NFL football and went from 1st to 3rd in the ratings. The 1995-96 season was even worse.
