WWF's Martin Harris recently visited Cape York Peninsula to experience the Mapoon Aboriginal community's turtle conservation work first hand. The Mapoon community was awarded a TSN Community Grant for feral pig exclusion devices to protect turtle nests.
Mapoon Book One is the story of the people in their own words, Book two is the story as edited from the records of the missionaries and government - and the third tells about the mining companies and what they also did to the people -- the last also covers Aurukun, where we helped stop Shell from mining over 500 sq miles which is still hunt gathered...

hi, they were removed in chains 60s by the Queensland government with their school, church and homes burnt down officially in order to 'assimulate them' but mostly to give their tribal lands to mining companies. We raised a lot of support with books about them - and funds - and the people were not kicked out again... I am really happy to see how well they are now doing, Jan Roberts
