khamnouan, not only is your analogy poor, but its incorrect. China conquered Xinjiang and Tibet, and quite frequently enforces the peace with a gun. The Manchus and the Mongolians conquered China in their day, and if you look back far enough, the Tibetans once invaded as far as Xi'an. The best weapon the Americans had was disease; the empire building in the new world was on the coat tails of catastrophic population collapse.
