@zulu547 : Yes. Its a special unit from the swiss military. Once, as Rome was attacked, the swiss helped the pope. Since this, the guards in the "clown costumes" are the Guards in Vatican. Their very polite, and most of them speak french or german, english and italian, so the understand everybody :-) We had a conversation with one of them, while going to a small german church for mass, nearby the st. peters cathedral :-)

Whatever those guards (Papal) are called i think there called. They are mostly ex special forces. The best of the best. There costumes were designed be Di Vinci back in the day, and they have a whole armory of cool toys.
