@obesehairydog: i'd suggest checking out "the boxer's omen", "tetsuo: the iron man", "eraserhead", and "forbidden zone" for starters. some of those aren't so jodorowsky-esque, but they're certainly weird cult movies. also, if you can get your hands on them, "petey wheatstraw" and "alabama's ghost" are pretty fuckin' absurd.

Check out Viva La Muerte.

This movie was my introduction to foreign film... i'v been a fan ever since. I'd recommend Sante Sangre also by this director, as well as anything by Peter Greenaway (esp. The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover). Also, Passolini's 180 Days of Sodom is intense... Top it off with any of Pedro Almodovar's early comedies & you've got one heck of a movie night! XD

I wish I could turn shit into gold.

I've had the box set for while now and just got around to watching the holy mountain and it's pretty surreal. You really nailed it in your review. I consider Jodorowski's films to be more visceral experiences than anything so I never read too deep into them but you can't help but to notice and study all the sacrilegious imagery among other things.

ok i realize everyone has their own opinions on movies and their own takes on the meanings in the movies but i feel many of you are not seeing this movie for what it is or have no actual knowledge on the scenery and plot of the movie. this movie is unique which is cool but it is filled to the brim with esoteric symbolism and luciferian doctrines under the guise of religions like christianity and judaism. i am no expert but i am knowledgeable on the subjects. i think jodorowsky is an occultist

You should review Mullholand Drive. I know it's more mainstream, but still. It's an amazing, fucked-up movie.

Thanks for the heads up

Nice review! You should've mentioned the set work that was involved, amazing detail and work was put forth on a lot of scenes. Also what was your take on all the odd ball animals that were thrown in the movie, at times it seemed like every scene had one in it. If you like his style you should check out Fernando Arabal, his film Viva la muerte was really good in my opinion, keep up the good work!

sgtOOX: i don't own either of those. i really ought to pick up akira, because that's an old favorite of mine. maybe i'll have to do some anime reviews this week, though. keep an eye out.

Jodorowsky is dope. I got the boxset with this, Fando Y Lis and El Topo. I love all ofthe films. I wish they'd release Santa Sangre on Region 1 DVD. That is a must. Nice review.

chocolatetorpedo: thanks for the feedback! yeah, "santa sangre" would be really nice to have, wouldn't it? it must be one of those cases where some company owns the rights for a stateside release, and just sits on it, doing nothing with the property, for whatever reason.
