Canadian Seal Hunt Defended

And Canadian seal hunters are preparing for the next stage of the seal hunt which begins today. One hunter defends his job and discusses the hunt, the pressure, and the controversy.

The Canadian government promised this year's hunt would be more humane.
It's allowing hunters to kill up to 275,000 young harp seals on the ice floes off Eastern Canada.
Anti-sealing groups complained they have not been allowed to observe the hunt.
They say the government's new killing procedures, intended to ensure a swift death, were not likely to be more humane.
After a hunter shoots or clubs a seal, he now must check its eyes to see if it's dead, and if not, the animal's main arteries must be cut.
The hunt always prompts a debate between those who say it is cruel and unsustainable, and those who say it is a legitimate harvesting of a small portion, of the 5.5 million-strong seal herd.
Jim Dobbin hunts seals and says this is a tradition that has been going on for hundreds of years and was no different than hunting any other animal.
[Jim Dobbin, Seal Hunter]:
"The money is good and it's the same thing as killing a fish or gutting a fish, no difference."
Dobbin also said animal rights groups were not basing their arguments on facts.
[Jim Dobbin, Seal Hunter]:
"I mean it definitely not facts or based on any kind of facts, I mean they are just going out and getting a few pictures of seals with blood on ice, it looks horrendous, and I guarantee you no hunt or no animal being killed is very pretty to look at , at no time, let alone on ice with background."

The furs from the seals are made into coats and other clothes, and there is a growing market for seal oil, high in omega-3 fatty acid.

@arwenpandora The arctic is not farm land, the cost of growing & shipping produce does far more environmental damage in a year then the seal hunt has done in its history.

All that farm land destroys wildlife habitat. Fertilizers & insecticides toxicify the environment.

But doesn't matter now. Anti Seal hunt activists ended my job that I lived in harmony with nature.

Now I work in the Alberta Oil sands. The seals will all be dead in a few years as the ice retreats.

I have plenty of interest in the seal slaughter mainly de to the extended circumstances in which the ecosystem of not just the seals but all marine life are quickly be affected by the lack of ice and the warming of the oceanic water and the corpses of the marine lives that are washing ashore that have either drowned, contaminanted, and other circumstances which are still being investigated by marine biologists from everywhere.
