I love this group but they're insane. They're weird, too, which I think helped in the long run to prevent all their critics, especially from the punk/new wave/alternative press, from painting them as a pop band. They were commercially successful, but they were not mainstream artists.

Spot on. They were always something quirky about them. I think it had a lot to do with Mick. He makes these crazy faces when he's playing drums. Plus they got quirky songs too: Tusk comes to mind, even The Chain sounds kinda quirky.
