PHPBB ( http://www.phpbb.com ) (free) and vBulletin ( http://www.vbulletin.com ) (commercial) are unquestionably the two leading PHP Based Forum/bulletin board "solutions" out there.
(nods to free SMF as well http://www.simplemachines.org ). While these are excellent, robust products that can handle heavy traffic, providing fine tuning administration options, they are overkill for most websites.

If you run a Joomla website, you will have to administer Joomla and PHPBB/vBulletin in separate back ends/interfaces, and PHPBB/vBulletin will require its own database which is a problem if you have a limited number of databases to work with.

Because of the database issue, users will have to register in BOTH Joomla AND PHPBB/vBulletin, as so probably won't. And, they WILL notice how differently the forum looks from the regular Joomla webite, which is quite jarring.

Tha fact is, your Joomla website and forum WILL be two totally separate entities.

For Joomla users, both 1.0, 1.5 and versions to come, there is another solution. It's call FireBoard forum. FireBoard Forum seamlessly integrates into your Joomla instance, using the same users table of your Joomla instance, such that users need not register in both places. This also means that FireBoard Forum does not need its own database. And, you administer FireBoard Forum in your familiar Joomla back end.

Understand that you will not get the same level of sophistication as you will with PHPBB/vBulletin/SMF, but sophistication is not necessarily the most important thing. With FireBoard you will get a nicer looking solution that is easier to administer, easier for users to use, and looks better because it is part of your Joomla website.

Unless you expect thousands of visitors and really want to become a forum moderating wizard, FireBoard forum is an EXCELLENT alternative that I endorse AND USE.

Get Fireboard from from Best Of Joomla! ( http://www.bestofjoomla.com ) or search for it in the extensions at Joomla.org ( http://extensions.joomla.org ) (over 300,000 views!!!)

  • Please guide me on where to downlaod fireboard the standard version, I looked everywhere, please post the link

  • it's at kunena . com now: same thing as fireboard, just new name and home.

  • nice video. i been using drupal all most 2 weeks now and there are so many problems and bugs. every time u have to download modules. "ops" there is another problem i need to run and find some other modules to fix this crap ......... oooooH crap not this again :@ :@:@:@.....

  • unfortunately, you will prob have the same prob with joomla. This is almost unavoidable with the base code always being updated, making probs for the plugins, plus the issue of javascript library (mootols, jquery, etc) clashes with one another and even with themselves, and compatability between all the different plugins. There is no easy fix, as you will soon see. Bottom line is use plugins sparingly and spread them out (not too many per page).

  • forumotion is a forum hosting site, presumably phpbb.

Can fireboard/kunena do as much as phpbb? no, BUT it integrates with a Joomla site. If you want a forum, pure and simple, use phpbb whether you use forumotion or not (i would rather pay for my own hosting and set up phpbb myself). If want a site that is BOTH a "web site" and forum, go with Joomla/Kunena, but you wont have as much control over the forum aspect.
