Martin Luther had vowed to never take a wife. But Katharina von Bora boldly told him, since he was partially responsible for her unwed state, that he either needed to find her a husband, or he needed to marry her himself. And so he married her, "to spite the Devil," as he said. But what started out as a marriage of obligation turned out to be one of the most glorious marriages outside of the Bible in the history of the world.

This clip is excerpted from the sermon "Friend with Benefits," part 2 of Mars Hill Church's Real Marriage sermon series, based off the book of the same name by Pastor Mark and Grace Driscoll. It was preached by Pastor Mark at Mars Hill Downtown Bellevue and released on January 22.

  • @homestar4ever

Ruth 4 9 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses!”

  • @homestar4ever Ruth is woman of desperation. Boaz is a man of substance. There is no idea that Ruth can make it on her own or that she has an equal place in the relationship. If ever there was a patriarchal marriage this is it.

Women are easier to get along with if you think of them as property.

  • In this "model" marriage the bride and groom are brought together by obligation rather then mutual affection. I guess marriages like that worked better in Luther's day than they do in our day.

  • @SamWiseGingy Song of Solomon and Ruth is where I'd point you :)

  • Please tell me the model marriage's in the Bible.

  • Mark, what is the best biography that you have read on Martin Luther, in regards to his marriage, not his life's work?

  • FIRST! got it.
