Newspapers Suffer Spate of Layoffs, Decline in Circulation, Ad Revenue, Stock Price: A Roundtable Discussion on the State of the Industry
We take an in-depth look at the state of the newspaper industry. In recent months, more than 6,000 print journalists have lost their jobs, newspaper circulation is down, and so is advertising revenue, page counts and stock prices. We host a roundtable discussion with Bernard Lunzer, president of the Newspaper Guild; former New York Times correspondent, Chris Hedges, now at the Nation Institute; and Linda Jue, director of New Voices in Independent Journalism.
Irony: no one cares.
I haven't watched television since I was 12. Forget newspapers. TV is dead.

Another positive that print has over the internet is that when someone, oh say a politician or someone in authority, is quoted once it is in print and circulated it cannot be edited. Anyone can go back and edit or 'change their mind' to say something different on their web page. It's always been a good industry and trade to me. Just wanted to share, Thanks!

To dcprotests I'd just like to say as far as waste do you mean trees? Or what? Anything that has great waste can be improved on. For instance, if we ever get to use industrial hemp this may help control paper cost for the papers and save trees. One acre of trees takes 10+ years to grow while an acre of hemp replenishes in one season. Aside from propaganda, we all know it's out there, the press has helped people communicate for the better.common good for ages also. Martin Luther, for 1.

I was flipping through channels and saw a Reading Rainbow episode called How to Make a Newspaper. They might as well shelve that old episode, because there's going to be little reason to learn how to prepare for a paper career. Thanks in part to the economy, but also to the rich, do-nothing executives who should have prepared papers for a digital, Internet world. All they were preparing for was making themselves richer through bonuses and raises while laying off smaller people.

Many papers are indirectly controlled by the military. I realized this when I went to a Washington Post event and they had ads up for job positions. I noticed they were favoring MILITARY applicants. This right there shows a bias in newspaper reporting by selecting military personal to create news content. This is how the government controls the news without having to own them. But the effect is exactly the same. So the hell with the newspapers! They can still have a web presence.

This is wonderful news. Newspaper companies are too big and waste a lot anyway. Most newpapers only print civilization propaganda anyway.
