Governors Island, 8/22/09, Orensanz Summer Museum: Miguel Algarin, poet and founder of the Nuyorican Poets Café reads excerpts from his recently released Survival Supervivencia. In this quintessential collection of 35-years of poetry and prose, the famed Nuyorican details life in America through reflections on his youth to the quest for the meaning of life in the midst of tragedy, poverty and death. Born on September 11th , Algarins life has been a tale of survival.

Algarin, a Puerto Rican scholar and Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University, is one of the most prolific, creative and influential literary figures in the United States and Latin America. He has received numerous awards, including three American Book Awards.

Algarin is the author of several poetry collections, sole translator of Pablo Nerudas Song of Protest and founder of the world-renowned Nuyorican Poets Café.
