Herlea is one of the best Rigolettos. He sings with much feeling and has a very fine voice. Also listen to Merrill, Warren, Gobbi, and Bastianini for other great interpretations.
• "Herlea creates great Rigoletto - Add Nicolae Herlea to your Metropolitan musts of the new season. His Rigoletto was in the best tradition of great singing and great acting. Here was a Rigoletto of astonishing bounce in his moments of gnomish farce and of even more astonishing passion in anguish and ferocity. Heightening the portrait was a voice of searching power." the few who build up an international career left Romania for good and early.... like ZEANI.... but singers like Herlea... Cernei... Pally... etc.... had always a handicap... thanks God now there are forums like youtube and they get recognition from opera fans worldwide....
coz one doesnot want to upset o boss and show him what an idiot he is, one looks for a compromise: Ok.... XXX.... doesnot has this part in his repertoire.... But the boss insists: No problem. I have red in your book about Rossini that a singer learned a part in 2 days!!!.... So the GMD of Paris had to be informed that no singer is awaylable....Herlea stayed at home.... XXX remained lyrical tenor and the GMD never called again!
political cultural leaders (like the omnipotent Popescu dumnezeu = Popescu "God") were imbecils... never had seen an opera house from the inside....but THEY decided who could travel or not... example: one day the GMD of Paris called in deperatedly need of a Figaro/Barbiere... PLS HELP ME!!!! GIVE ME HERLEA!!! .... ok, but I have to check up with my boss....call you later.... now this Popescu said: No!... Herlea is traveling a lot lately!!! Why not XXX ( a lyrical tenor)????...
it has to do partly with romanians themselves.... with the westerners and with policy.... from 1950 to 1990 singers from the eastern side of the iron courtain were "strange birds".... they were very good but "comunists"... that means everything could happen.... they had contracts but the omnipotent secret police did not gave them permission to travel.... no western opera house could plan for 1 or 2 years with eastern singers.... they night have come or might not.....
buzdugan2k means BMW and Mercedes (Benz) cars as universal symbols in a society where freedom and democracy degenerated to anarchy.... ........ why romanian opera singers of the past decades did not got international recognition they deserved?.... this has nothing to do with the present BMW/MERCEDES-mentality.....
