have they gotten more reliable?

higher maint cost? only thing on a diesel that needs to be changed more often then a gas burner is the fuel filter and thats every 30k miles.

I agree the stereo really sucks! I heard 10 speaker audio and thought this should sound sweet, but I was WRONG! However, its a very nice car and there is always room for aftermarket improvements.

Very nice engine! I have the same on my A3.

What's the point of talking shit?
Edmunds Insideline tested the 2009 Jetta TDI and they got 35 MPG on their observed combined cycle.
Quoted data from Spritmonitor is 38 MPG for a Jetta TDI 140HP (14 drivers) and 36 MPG for a Golf TDI 140HP (104 drivers).

are there glow plugs or a cold start aid?

Yes, but I never see them come on for more than a second in Phoenix. It has to be really cold for them to stay on longer than that.
