Almost as big as a 9.25" gauge 15F 4-8-2, this 22 Class is probably the most powerful 7 1/2" gauge steam locomotive in Australia. It is also the only one of its kind ever modelled.
The locomotive has a loud exhaust beat but due to it being a "Lempor" results in a less powerful and crisp bark - One could imagine what it would sound like with a conventional one! SAR in 7 1/4" gauge is within the modelling capabilities of most South African Modellers and it handles and behaves similar to a full size machine. In terms of Steam Preservation, 7 1/4" gauge South African Railways steam locomotives do justice in every respect to their full-size counterparts and it is hoped that more Model Engineers will build this size of locomotive to haul enclosed SAR passenger carriages and heavy freight.

  • Wow... makes my n gauge loco's look like toys. Awesome machine.

  • I know this guy personally who built this locomotive. Great Guy!

It is a fine display of South African Steam Power! If you look at the way the loco pulls and all its strength even in this size (close to 1/3 size scale), it just lets you ponder the awesome power & strength of what the full size could do!

That must have been amazing seeing a loco of this brute strength thunder past you next to the track, shaking the ground, steam billowing down the side of it!

  • Where is it?

  • Morphett Vale Model Engineering Club - South Australia I think. If you want the exact address I can get it for you.

    Regards

    Bryn
