Instructional Video for playing David Wilcox's song Language Of The Heart on Acoustic Guitar in DADGAD Tuning

Notes:

1) It's not really DADGAD. Dave's tuned it to C#,G#,C#,F#,G#,C#, which is a mess to write

2) Yeah, there are mistakes. That's O.K. 99% of guitar playing is about making mistakes, well until you quit making them.

3) Buy David's DVD on Homespun Records "The Guitar of David Wilcox" if you want more on his alternative tuning methods. It's quite good.

4) Be the person you'd like to meet out in the world. Remember, being kind is not a sign of weakness, and stand up for what you believe in.

  • Very good video and thanks for the tuning dadgad.

But your into is not correct.

It should be low D Fsharp G OpenA5th string fsharp G 6 notes total.

    Your playing only 5.

    No disrespect meant at all.

    Regards

  • No disrespect taken. You get what you pay for I guess! :) As pointed out below, Admittedly, I did get the string numbering backwards. Stage fright probably. Not sure what you're talking about on the D F# G A F# G? Elaborate? Dave takes DADGAD and drops it down a 1/2 step to get even more of a bassy sound and the real tuning is in the info section. Tune to whatever you like and feel comfortable with.

  • Sounds like you appreciate a different sound, I am curious if you have checked out any Don Ross. Cheers!

  • I have. And Andy McKee. They use much of the alternative tuning methods to create all the inner harmonics that sound so good. I do like David's songwriting and when I hear Dan or Andy, I wish they had David singing.

  • Good lesson. Just one comment. You call the lowest string the 1st string and the highest string the 6th string. This is the opposite of most instructions. I find it a little confusing.

  • You're absolutely right. Sorry about that. After I was done with the video, I thought about reshooting it, but my I haven't had a ton of time. Finally moved to a MacBook, so hopefully I'll get back at it again!

  • you shouldnt move fingers off a chord until its needed for the next that way you dont get those holes in the ring. With finger picking there are no real chords. every finger move is idependent although you may be forming a chord youll get a much less hurky gerky sound. great song

  • Lovely... as far as the comments regarding the difference between your performance and the original... Not even David himself plays it the same way every time. Your interpretation is perfect just the way it is. Love it.

  • That's the confusing thing about guitar: the 1st string is actually the 6th and vice versa. It always messes me up. The lower the string's pitch, the higher the number. But the way you count them makes more sense.

  • Very good. But your numbering of strings is backwards and confusing.

  • One of my all time favorite songs. Thank you for putting this on youtube. I would move the rest of the song!
