A playthrough of Yokai Yasiki (Ghost House) for the MSX. I didn't know this was good game when I purchased it a few months back. I only bought a loose cartridge so I could cannibalize the outer casing, instead I decided to keep it the way it is now. It has become a welcome edition to my favorite games.

The story is nothing but cliché. Ghosts have kidnapped a man's main squeeze and you go to their haunted hideout to rescue her. Piece of cake, right? Of course it is. This house is like a maze but thank god the levels don't look all the same, and the maps are much smaller compared to Goonies. You'll need to complete 5 levels and bosses before your gal is free. You're are allowed to warp to different levels of the game through funerary pyre kinda like Super Mario Bros, but I didn't see the point of it unless you looking for extra health.

On the cartridge label, I'm assuming the main character is a farmer armed only with his flashlight. Your flashlight in the beginning is limited to close range, but it can be upgraded to long range which will want most of the time. Several items can be released from flashing at red lanterns such as health, invincibility, and bag of extra points. There's also a statutes that will fully restore your powers if you have a white triangles in your possession (I have no idea what they're called). Your main objective is to defeat the bosses in each stage but to reach them you need to find 5 paper seals scatter through each level. For every 5 paper seals you get a key which allows you to tackle the boss, and the bosses are easy when you figured out their weakness. Although it may not be apparent at first, I would know because I remember spending a whole day trying to defeat the first boss until someone told me how.

If you like Goonies or feel the need of a good platformer then give this game a shot. It's simple, fun, & short and perfect for speedrun attempts.

    thanks for posting this

  • Thanks for watching. Yeah definitely go out and find a copy. You won't regret paying so little for an awesome game.

  • Thanks for posting this.

This is an excellent game. It has indeed some likeness to Goonies.

This game has many Shinto elements in it,which makes it very interesting to play this game. The white triangles are food that is put in front of a statue of Buddha (or another god) in a shrine.

This is one of Casio's best.

  • Makes sense that if the white triangles are food it would restore health. Now that you mention they look like onigiri. Is that what they're?

  • I've played this game 15 years ago and didn't know how to kill the first boss . :(

  • I bought this game off of ebay and just got it in the mail today. I must be a complete idiot, but how do you jump? I've tried all the keys on my MSX and nothing's working.

  • god, i took forever to figure out how to kill the 1st boss XD

i think i saw a hint in a magazine (a picture with the guy starting to jump), i've tried it and it worked, i was so happy XD.

i remember i got pwned by the big foot in the green stage that day T_T

  • Youkai featured in this game:

    Hitodama

    Karakasa-Obake

    Long-Necked Woman

    Paper Lantern Monster

  • After playing ( The Goonies ) i was looking for a game that has the same elements which made the Goonies an excellent game, nd this game was the closest one. I realy enjoied playing it.

P.S: I agree with you about the witch boss, it took me about two weeks, back then in 1992.

  • What's really stupid is that all the other bosses are a piece of cake.. the whole game is kinda easy, except for that fucking witch 1st boss.

If it wasn't for the 1st boss, this game would be simply brilliant, a gem everyone should play. At least on this video you show exactly what you are supposed to do to beat her :)

  • F U C K this game. The 1st boss is stupidly hard. It took me years to find out how to beat it. After I finally found where the heck I was supposed to jump to hit her mouth, the rest of the game lasted like 30 minutes to me.

Here in Brazil I heard many stories of what you had to do to beat that witch...finding all grey statues, destroy every lamp, find all candles... Nobody knew what you had to do to defeat it, and making all levels accesible from start only added to the confusion.

  • Thanks for posting such a nostalgic scenes, dude.
