Premise: CAPS altitude is 400 feet. If your engine goes away below that altitude, can you trade airspeed for extra altitude and how much gain will you gain?
Test conditions: Set 1
Rotation speed: 70 knots.
Climb: VY
Alt: 3000 MSL (HARD DECK) - 3300 MSL engine killed
Time: From engine out, reaction delay and any altitude gained.
Test 2:
Rotation speed: 70 knots
Climb: VY
Altitude: 0 (Deck) to 300 MSL (Engine killed)
Time: From engine out, reaction delay and any altitude gained.
Conclusions: Minimal altitude gain. Reaction delay will have significant effect on amount of airspeed remaining to trade for altitude. Close to the ground, significant risk of stall spin and/or loss of control while attempting landing ahead.

Nice video. You could always go for a beach, since that's how it's done out there on Long Island! :-)

above 85 knots you should retract your flaps (g2 or g1) with the flaps up... you may gain more altitude... but in general... the average person waits way to long to after an engine failure so if they are not above 400 they should not even consider it. but Cirrus does say that it has been demonstrated BELOW 400.. they just dont tell us how much below :)

The point of the exercise was to show pilots that below 400, their options are ONLY land ahead and not to get creative by maxing out the AoA and doing something stupid. Join Cirrus Owners and Pilots association for the relevant discussion
