Performance of Spanish era style dancing. For over 300 years Guam was a stop-over point for Spanish Galleons sailing from Acapulco, Mexico to Manila. The blending of things both native and Spanish developed into Guam's rich Hispanic culture.
Spanish and Mexican sailors introduced many new styles of dancing to the islanders. These dances combined both native Chamorro and Hispanic-Mexican styles. Filipino influences may also have contributed to these dance styles.
The style of dress for both male and female dancers came most likely from the southern parts of Mexico. These styles of dress were introduced to Guam and the Philippines. In the state of Chiapas, Mexico many dances are also performed with bare feet.
This Chamorro 'stick dance' was likely inspired by the 'paloteos' dances from Spain. This type of dancing may have also inspired the Mexican 'paloteros' and 'machete' dances, as well as the Filipino SAKUTING dance . Which bear a striking resemblance to these Chamorro dances.
Click the links below to see a examples of both Spanish 'paloteos' , Mexican machete, and Filipino SAKUTING dances. Take note of the similarities to many Chamorro-Hispanic dances.

This Group is Rasan Acho Latte. There's actually a lot more to it than just this portion. Beautiful Group. I enjoy all of the chamorro groups and performances.

Interesting to see the spanish paloteos dancing from your links. And even though these styles were inspired by Spanish styles, we can still call them Chamorro. We can't deny our history. This dance is a result of that influence. Yet we have made it our own by incorporating our own choreography, song, and most importantly our SPIRIT. Biba Chamorro!
