I sat down with a bunch of tabla sounds and set out on the mission to incorporate each of them somehow into a rhythm. What you now have is the outcome of that initial goal. Once the beat was completed, I was originally trying to create elaborate guitar parts, but nothing worked. So I scrapped the acoustic and went to the electric , with my fx pedal and a vintage amp-- I like the haunting vibe and the ambiance that it all created. If you listen very closely, you can hear a middle eastern guitar solo running throughout...I toned it down so much that it became a vague piece of ambiance-- but you can make out bits here and there.
The first samples are from the incredibly philosophical and thought stirring film 'Red Belt' by David Mamet. The chanting you hear is of Hindu origins and is simply entitled 'Veda part 1' with no further info. When I heard it the direction of this track changed, because it struck me as something that would be interesting to start building a structure around. I wanted to see if I could use my composition and various additional tweaks to heighten the resonance of the raw chanting. The chanting is apparently about unity, togetherness, etc and you'll notice that the samples start to contrast that message by expressing sensations of isolation, anger, feeling trapped. Which leads into the samples of an Indian dude having a panic attack on an airplane as air marshals handcuff him. And finally, a Sikh mother bursting in on her teenage son who's filming himself as he boisterously plays drums. She starts screaming at him and berating him for playing and filming his music-- which I love the irony of when it's sampled on a track. Plus her tones-- that woman knows how to bring the pain for real kid! lol
Ultimately I tried to bridge a certain traditionalism with elements of ambient, trip-hop, chill out (etc) in a cohesive manner that defies itself being pigeonholed...with ease.
ps: Big ups to my Hindu peeps, and the toughest people on earth; brown mothers
