In 2003 I made a film working with children in Bethlehem - Wesam took part. He filmed a story about his grandfather who had made a beautiful garden near the refugee camp where he lived. When he made contact last year on facebook, it didn't surprise me that he is now studying to make documentaries.
But now I'm curious - what has become of the other participants? Vera who dreamed of love or Rinad who struggled to get to school in the morning past the road blocks?
In the intervening years the children we worked with have become young adults, carving a place for themselves in this city with 50% unemployment and a tourist industry on its knees. Are Mohammed's kites still bravely defying the borders or is he pushing new boundaries now? Will Wesam and myself even be able to find them in the narrow streets and tight-knit communities, to ask: What is it like - coming of age in Bethlehem?
