The Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery, working out of Emory Univ. in GA. tour the USA creating spiritual sand pictures -Mandalas-containing sacred geometry.Since the Chinese invasion of their Tibetan homeland, the Monks have established a new foothold in India where they number over 3,000. Upon their completion ,the Mandala is destroyed by formally sweeping the sand into the middle of the table in a grand Buddhist ceremony. This is accompanied by melodious and deep voiced chants and prayers. The sand is removed to the nearby waterway where it is dispersed with a prayer for universal healing, peace and compassion. In the forefront of this video you will see "Lama" Michael Curry(as he is called by the Monks themselves), Director of the American Theater where this event is held. He, a practicising Buddhist, was delegated the responsibility of also destroying a community Mandala located at the foot of the stage. You will see him walk around that Mandala in conjunction with the Tibetan Monks. He kindly hosts this program annually and also puts on a show re: Tibetan Song & Dance. If you are in the Hampton,VA area in the first week of Aug., please drop by. You can watch the Mandala being created for several days and follow it to its concluding ceremony.
