There's been a increase in the number of people booking gap year projects to work and travel abroad. Year Out Group - the industry's representative body -- say companies have seen sales rise by as much as 40% on last year's figures. The rise comes after this summer's squeeze on university places and continued uncertainty in the jobs market. The BBC's Howard Johnson has travelled to northern India to find out why British students are choosing to spend a year away from home.

Contributors: NIKKI DADHLEY, Gap year student 45' RICHARD OLIVER, Year Out Group 1'14 OLIVER HARKUS, Gap year traveller 2'01 SIMON FERRAND, Head of Consular Operations India 2'27

Filmed, edited and reported by Howard Johnson. Additional camerawork: Rohit Vats
