I think it could be about all the mothers ('sisters') lamenting for their own particular 'youngling'. Extremely moving song.

You are right, it is sad. The song is Mary's lament. As the King has ordered all male newborns to be slain, and she's lamenting that she will have to lose her baby. There is NO other pain like that of a mother who has lost a child. Unfortunately I can relate to this...it is completely indescribable.

Carm, I TOTALLY agree, as a child growing up in the 1980's. Eurythmics, Fleetwood Mac, U2, a-ha, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger were all there with me growing up. I MELTED when i heard the 1987 "Very Special Xmas" N Annie&Dave, Bruce Bob, U2, Sting, and Stevie were ALL on it. Dave and Annie's "Winter Wonderland" is Still my favorite rendition of that song :) I STILL get goose bumps when I hear it. And I LOVE her new Xmas CD

@EveDonovan Yes. Annie has described herself as having a dark demeanor. These carols are a testament to Annie's individuality and these songs sound nothing like the carols I grew up listening to. I love Annie's renditions of these classics.
ANNIE LENNOX ROCKS !!! This Lament really pulls the strings, Great Album too.

@EveDonovan My favorite version too, Eve. I have only heard Alison Moyet's version which is wonderful, but I love Annie's version more, because I love me some Annie as well=)
