Full video recording of our panel from MAGFest 9! We talk about how to turn a music hobby into a profession, whether you are a composer, sound designer or performer in the video game industry. It was a big success, and we had some great input from indie game composers Danny Baranowsky (Super Meat Boy, Canabalt) and Josh Whelchel (GunGirl 2, The Spirit Engine, etc.)

  • zircon, I desperately need the pdf text from this presentation. It all applies to me, and now I don't feel so alone in my pursuit, hermit indoor passion, lost my girlfriend, little family contact, but all will be worth it in the end. This session is great and so motivating, I need the text in pdf please. Is there anyway you can reup or send these?

  • @empowermph We don't have text/PDF for this unfortunately. :/ Did you mean the Powerpoint?

  • @zirconst any format containing the text from these slides in your presentation will do fine if you still have them. im hoping u do

  • @empowermph I'll try to get them up on my website (zirconmusic) soon.

  • A single question, if I can...

Are Composition studies 'required' to write music for games?

I mean, did some of you (eg Wilbert, or you, zircon) study composition at the conservatory? Did this help you in your career? Or 'Aficionado' rules?

..personally, I prefer the second... ^^

  • @TheDarkraven92 If you watch through the whole 4 part panel we talk about this more. But basically no, you don't need to go to a conservatory or study composition. Results are what matter, so if you have a really good ear and can write great pieces no problem, good for you. Personally though, I've taken theory + arrangement classes and they were incredibly helpful!

  • This is why the music in Monkey Island 2: SE was phenomenal! You people are amazing and inspiring!

  • Very informative. Just what I needed to hear. Thanks a lot for a recording of this panel.

  • Nice video, I'm hoping to get this far as well some day. There's nothing better than to hear your own music played by someone else (in a positive way of course =D)

  • LOL!!!!

the guy say fuck you to the lady in the begining XD

  • Hey Andrew, just got a chance to check out this video, really great stuff! I havn't had too much experience in the world of game composition, but a lot of what you guys have said is so true!

Let me know when you get to be on a panel again, I would love to check it out.
