http://lockergnome.com - A user's first time with Linux can leave a lasting impression that they will carry with them for some time. For many, that first impression was love at first sight. For others, the particular distro or hardware configuration may have made the experience less than enjoyable, leaving the user with a bad taste in their mouth for Linux.
But, what if you sit an average user in front of Ubuntu for the first time? How do regular people (non-geeks) feel about the interface? Surprisingly, Joe Pirillo did quite well for his first time around.

linux is just not a distro for casual PC users, its main uses are programming and scientific stuff. also its not a commercial OS so its not really trying to compete with windows. nobody really cares if you use windows or linux but the mere existence of this OS means that commercial software suppliers need to innovate more to keep their custormer base. there is a small nerd community who would like everyone to use linux but these are just the people who have a "stop hating what i like" attitude

oh, by the way: - most servers you do anything with as a users online are likely to run linux. - a wild range of electronic devices that require some form of OS run linux. - Android seems to have kicked every other mobile OS off the market at the moment.
so much for linux being an "underling".

build it if you really want it that badly.
it took Microsoft a quarter of a century to arrive at their current GUI - and if you take a look at the ride it took, ... "simple" really isn't among the first adjectives that come to mind to describe Windows as an idea.

You reflect on one part of my comment. There is an important part you missed. One GUI, Win7 like, across all distros, installed by default. User can later change of course. You see, why free will and nerds are killing Linux.

Already been done! Check out Zorin OS. My wife is using the "Windows 7" GUI, and I'm using the "OS/X" GUI on the same installation. Easy to swap, too. Total of 6 GUIs available in Zorin OS Ultimate
