Gresham, Smith and Partners developed this traffic simulation of a continuous flow intersection (CFI) at the SR 400 and SR 53 intersection for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The CFI relocates left turns several hundred feet prior to the main intersection. Through the use of signal timing, turn lane placement and access control, capacity can be significantly increased at intersection. The cost of a CFI is approximately 10 to 20 percent of the cost of grade separated interchange but provides approximately 75 percent of the capacity of a grade separated interchange.
