Probably the best known of the Scottish bothy ballads, the "bothy" being the shed where the plowmen slept, some distance from the main farm-house. Unmarried farm servants were hired for a six-month term at the seasonal feeing fairs, of which Porter Fair - the Turriff, or Turra, market - was the biggest in Aberdeenshire. The song tells of the hardships and aspirations of a young farm worker.
