To all you people: This is horse behind the vertical. His head shouldn't be "tucked" he should be rounding throughout his back to protect his spinal cord. However, it's difficult for a horse to maintain impulsion at the walk so don't judge him too harshly. I like the way this instructor is encouraging to her student and gives a series of exercises to do to improve her form. Her teaching could improve by giving explanations of what exactly her rider is doing and why it is done. Excellent Job! :)

@Magwian While gymnastic shoes or flat ballet shoes work just fine (in fact several of our vaulters don't even wear shoes in practice), they actually make shoes especially for vaulting. They're similar to a gymnastic shoe, leather slip on, with either a solid or split, flat sole. The grooves in the sole only run from toe to heel to decrease slippage. :)

im an english rider and honestly, i never cared much for vaulting until i saw this. this video is impressive. I bet her arms hurt like crazy after lifting herself up so many times. very well done! I doubt I would be able to do this, so good job! :D

I was just wondering do you have to have previous gymnastic training to take vaulting? because i wanted to start
-
Why is the horse so far behind the vertical? That's not good form at all.
-
I am just starting a vaulting program and this video was very helpful to me.
-
you should submit a video for my draft contest as we need more draft horses in the vaulting division!!!

amazing! u are really learning well congrats. I am learning too and I hate the knee move! I have to learn on an arab too so his back is so thin, and i have nothing to really stay on well XD

The reason the horse is over the vertical is that it is wearing side reins, and its hard to keep a horse perfectly round with them. The horse needs to be in an outline for vaulting because if a rider vaults on a horse with a hollow back, it can hurt him. If the horse is rounded, the back is soft and the heind legs are moving under the body, so the impact of the rider is easier for them to take.

Y do you have to keep your toes down?
lalagogo386 4 years ago
Because that's the proper form in the equestrian vaulting basic seat. And it looks pretty too.

what do u wear on your feet for vaulting?

gymnastic shoes. They are soft and flexible, which is important, because eventually you are standing on the back of that horse, riding with your feet!
