Maplewoods residents unhappy with solutions offered

SINGAPORE : Residents of Maplewoods condominium are hoping for better solutions to the problems resulting from the King Albert Park MRT construction along Upper Bukit Timah Road.

This comes after a dialogue session with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and their MP for Holland-Bukit Timah Christopher de Souza last week.

Their concern - the safety of both drivers and pedestrians near the condo.

LTA had offered retaining the footpath after pedestrian safety concerns were voiced.

But keeping it means the footpath will have to be narrowed to accommodate construction works.

Michael Morris, member of the Maplewoods Management Council said: "We've built this mock-up to show what that walkway would look like at its most narrow point. The available space would allow for a walkway that varies between 0.9 metres and 0.3 metres, and this shows what 0.3 metres is."

LTA had also offered to re-draw the access into and out of the condo for vehicular safety.

Vehicles entering the launch shaft construction site will assemble opposite it and drive across the entrance.

The construction site for the tunnel boring machine is a little too close to home for residents at Maplewoods as it will be right up to their main entrance. And this, they said, is an accident waiting to happen.

"The additional traffic, the dump trucks, concrete mixers combined with pedestrian traffic - I'm concerned that there will be a near certainty that someone is going to get hurt or even killed," said one member of the public.

"I walk my daughter to school every day so I'm concerned about all the trucks coming in, (and) worried about the safety of my little kids," said another.

The area's MP said LTA is looking into residents' requests and will present more proposals next week.

"I will do my best to address the concerns of the residents because I share their anxiety, within the construction limitations," said Christopher de Souza, MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.

For now though, construction works have stopped.

  • 30 cm walkway is serious mega WTF. The authorities stupid or what? This is such common sense, and yet it has to result to a petition?

  • on a serious note, the residents in Holland Bukit Timag GRC are right in peitioning since the initial solutions is a joke... 30 cm walk way.... WTF!?
