1921- Downtown New Bedford, MA This vintage classic film depicts the famous trolley cars of the Union St Railway . The trolley in the opening shot (looking south on Purchase St.) is turning east onto William St. from Purchase St. Cherry & Webb would be to the left on the southeast corner. The white building just above the trolley to it's left in the background is Star Store. The building with the arches was the Merchants Bank later the site for Saltmarshes. The.conductor in the street has a control stick for the tracks to make the trolley go straight or turn. The store on the right southwest corner would be where Mr. Peanut was for many years in the 1960's to the late 80's. At one point in time the Union Street Railway had the most elaborate trolley system in the country. The last trolley made its final run on May 6, 1947 when modern buses took over the routes ending an era that some say had given New Bedford it's character. from the M.L.Baron historic archives.
