Ummm, the Sega Master System allowed 3 players...i remember playing with my brother and sister.
Maybe the PAL version differs, but i know 3 players was possible(two controllers, one joystick).

I was obsessed with the NES version as a child...this one looks a lot better graphically =-p Hopefully the gameplay was as good ;)
