Which e-tool is best for a bug out bag? The Gerber Gorge or Cold Steel Spetsnaz shovel? Weight, durability, dependability and ergonomics considered, the Cold Steel Special Forces shovel is the clear choice for me. It's sturdy and versatile and is a perfect addition to a bug out system, or even for weekend campers.

The Special Forces Shovel is modeled after the original Soviet Spetznaz shovel. The Spetznaz soldiers made up the most elite unit in the Soviet Army. The U.S. equivalent would be our Green Berets. The shovel head and socket are forged from medium carbon steel, then heat treated for maximum strength. The edges come sharpened to a utility/axe edge that can easily be improved to razor sharpness.

The Special Forces Shovel comes complete with a specially made cordura sheath. The sheath features an extra wide belt loop. The sheath and the shovel are available for sale as a stand alone items.

  • I pick is very important! Most dirt has stones and rocks in it that needs to be broken up. Clay is hard as cement went it is very dry a pick will do the job when a shovel will not!

  • @Boatdrunker That's true, though I doubt I'll be digging fox holes with a mini shovel. It's more for fire pits, burying excrement among other things, digging up plants, digging out a vehicle that's stuck, etc.

  • Weight... you have a real issue with weight... don't you.

  • @SyntheticParanoia Oh yeah. I'm all about less weight. Carrying heavy tools or equipment is a real calorie killer.

  • If I was going to put a shovel on my truck it would be a SHOVEL.

This is a typical example of someone trying to compromise on a tool to get a combination of uses and getting the worst of all. Don't be an idiot. An ax is an ax. A shovel is a shovel. A knife is a knife. If you try to combine all of that stuff, all you get is a boat anchor. As far as the "play" in your combi shovels? put a few washers on them.

  • @bigskip2121 This is not an example of that at all. What these tools are, are multi function. So it's not a shovel, it's a tool thats primarily a shovel with other functions built in to the design. The people you're talking about use flat head screw drivers to turn phillips head screws.

  • 3lbs? iv taken bigger shits than 3lb

  • You would be hesitant to put 3.5 pounds on a motorcycle or a jeep? Dude your a woman. You need to seriously toughen up lanky, if you plan on surviving in any adverse conditions, 3.5 pounds compared to 1.5 means absolutely shit.

  • Maybe the lockup sucks because you decided to play wannabe engineer and take it apart, and lost one of the pressed in nylon rings.

  • You can easyly remove the pick from the german spate. Just push the button all the way trough you can put it into parts.

  • Wow you are a fucking idiot!!! First of all Spetsnaz is Russian not German. And really? you think you need a pick only when digging an underground shelter?! LOL and you think a leather sheath is useless? You are the biggest fucking joke on youtube, you dont know shit, what do you need shovels for anyway? For a bug out bag? If thats the case you wont survive for a long time... Your knowledge on things are...

  • Have you tried to dig a hole with the Cold Steel? Looks like you have wacked things with it.

Those German shovels are a lot better at digging than the current US and NATO folding shovels.

  • @zeldagamerDX6 To be fair, the folding shovel didn't kick the Russians' asses... In fact, I remember the Russians kicking the Germans' asses, rather than vise-versa...

The Russians probably adopted the design for the folding shovel since it's a great, useful, lightweight, and versatile tool.
