In late 2007, an unknown Northern California rock band set out from home on a seven month tour to southern Mexico. They had no van and no gigs. Instead, they hauled their guitars, cello, drum kit, camping gear and human-powered sound system on bicycles, planning to pick up shows as they went, trusting their instincts and a benevolent force they called the "Golden Bubble" to provide for them and keep them safe from storied dangers. The journey became a test of the Pleasant Revolution, their name for the tour and their hypothesis that the planet's future depends on radical individual change and that living the change means a richer life. Over this 5,000-mile journey, our protagonists— intent on living a life of gritty adventure—test the limits of stepping lightly on the planet and explore the far reaches of a Mexico that few Mexicans, much less outsiders, know. They sleep in James Bond mansions on private beaches and under bridges with braying donkeys, get kicked out of plazas and talk transportation on national TV—trying to reach the fabled pyramids of Palenque, Chiapas in a sincere yet complex quest to make a difference.
