  • think of all the state champs that never were because they went to Blair. I guarantee its alot.

  • I didn't know that about Colorado having 6 state champs. That is dumb. The NJ state tourney does only have one champ, but I think they exclude prep schools. That monster hwt Steve Mocco from 5 or so years back was not allowed to participate in the state championship tournament because he went to blair. I'm not sure if they hold a separate tournament for those schools.

  • agreed. the reason its harder is : although a state like colorado or arizona is much larger area wise than jersey, it has a much smaller population. and besides that only ONE wrestler per wieght class is crowned champion in jersey, whereas colorado breaks their champs down into a half dozen groups or classes. does pennsylvania only have one champion too? if so, cory kolat is a madman. i grew up in south jersey, on the delaware river.

  • I think PA and NJ consistently produce the best hs wrestlers.

  • Tell me about it. There was a kid who placed 7/8 in the state from my hs in nj and he pinned the florida state champ that year in some tournament.

  • didnt Krieger also win the outstanding wrestler award that year?

  • good point, if monaco had gone to a top program he probably would have been a 2x ncaa champ. interestingly another kid from montclair state DID win the ncaas around 1979. (UNBELIEVABLE) montclair is in new jersey where i grew up. it was 10 times harder to be a high school stste champ in jersey than in alot of other states , like colorado, where i live now.

  • yeah if colleges put more money into their wrestling programs, they would get the best talent in Div I. Even today, the best wrestlers from high school get spread out over Division I, II, and III schools.

  • monaco was a div III wrestler! amazing he made it to the final

  • Best nostalgic part is the sports update... just a tidbit of info, unlike the current bottomlines, sliders and all that bs that make look any sports channel like bloomberg. Thanx 4 posting.
