  • It was 60 years ago but you're stll a nazi

  • Don't get me wrong. I am no nazi ! We do everything to remember the bravery of the Allies to save the world from the nazi invasion. Everytime we go out with our tanks is during a commemoration to give tribute to the sacrifice of our Allies.

  • Actually and not meny people know this the panzer 4 (g-j) weight only 25 tons compaired to the 36.4 tons of the sherman.

  • i find it funny that in the years of 1939-1945 that a litter over half the tanks made by america were shermans

  • The mark 4 was somewhat better. Its gun was higher velocity, had less drop, thus shot flatter and was easier to get a first hit then sherman 75mm gun. Also hull armor was 80mm, which meant the sherman 75mm would struggle with the hull at ranges greater then 500m.

Sherman 76 and sherman firefly though were better then mark 4 though. But minorly so like the Mark 4 was over the sherman 75.

It really came down to the crews.

  • ....or break by themself, complex heavy tanks were kill by there own mechanics

  • the firefly had an strong cannon. But the armour was bad... not enaugh armor. The 17 pnd couldn't destroy a king tiger from the front. But a TIGER I.

But few were built of it...

  • in fact the british 17 pnd had better ballistics

then the tiger 1 and panther 88mm and 75mm guns making it one of the best ,if not the best tank gun of the war , unfortunately for firefire crews they couldn't get into a protracted engagement with the tiger or panther

because of their woeful frontal protection

  • The Sherman was the best tool for the the allies job! It was agile, easy to manufacture, modify, retrofit with various engines etc. and was a beautifully simple design overall. Shermans lasted in service for 40 plus yrs, a testament to it's design. It's silly to compare Shermans and Tigers. In war for both, advantages/disadvantages.

  • The Sherman was a great MEDIUM tank. When forced to fight a "heavy", yes it got ugly quick.

  • Secondly on a small percentage of shermans ever encountered tanks, something like 15-20%. All other shermans encountered Dug in infantry and AT guns. Thus its low velocity gun was the best because of its effective HE shell, far superior to the axis 75mm and ever 88mm due to the fact it would not dig itself into the ground like a Higher Velocity 88 HE round. Even the tanks it did meet, chances were they were the Mark4 panzers or StugG series, which the 75mm was able to defeat often enough.

  • The 5 to 1 ratio of shermans to tigers is an estimate. No facts to back it up. Here is the flaw. Besides tigers there were 88 flak guns and Pak43s that could put 88mm holes in tanks, so there is no way to know what 88mm weapon killed an enemy tank. Second, tigers worked in groups with other less capable tanks in support. The chances of 5 shermans running into 1 tiger was remote, thus there is no way for said scenario to occur.
